Volunteer: Served With Love Dinner Shift

Join our Executive Chefs to provide the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia with a delicious dinner! We feed 250 to 300 people daily. You do not need to bring any food or supplies; everything will be onsite when you arrive to work with our Food Services team. Our Executive Chef sets the menu based on available ingredients in our pantry.

Available Shifts: Fridays, 4pm to 8pm

Food + Kitchen Safety:   

Your group will prepare all meals onsite in the Chestnut Street House commercial kitchen under the direction of the Food Service team.Volunteers must practice good food safety hygiene, including frequent hand-washing.  Hair must be covered, and long hair pulled back in a ponytail. RMHC will provide aprons, hairnets and gloves. Bring a clean baseball cap if you don't want to wear a hairnet.Wear comfortable clothing - a shirt or top with sleeves, long pants, and sneakers or closed-toe shoes with non-skid soles. No sleeveless shirts, tank tops, shorts,  sandals, flip flops or high heels should be worn in the commercial kitchen. Avoid wearing dangly jewelry (earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc.) which might fall into the food. We provide storage lockers with combination locks for your personal items.  

Assignments to Expect:   

Clean/sanitize dining tables and set up the steam table.Set up the buffet area - plates, take-out boxes, silverware, condiments.Fill napkin holders.Food prep tasks might include: chop veggies for salad bar and grab and gocut rolls for hot sandwichesprep side dishes - roast veggies, potato salad, coleslaw, etc. assemble parfaits, fruit cups, veggie & hummus cups for grab and gopackage ice cream, cookies, cake or brownies for dessertServe dinner buffet style 6pm to 7pm. Clear and wipe down dining tables after dinner. Individually package and label leftovers and restock the community refrigerators. Clean/sanitize the kitchen workstations and countertops; wash and put away dishes, pots and pans.  Sweep/mop floors. Check with Chef for any additional closing tasks.Leave your aprons and name badges in the kitchen at the end of your shift; We recycle them for future groups.

The Food Services Volunteer assists in keeping our Grab 'n Go Food Service area stocked and ready for our guest families to use.  This role is for an energetic and organized person who enjoys helping people, is adept at stocking/re-stocking perishable and non-perishable food items and supplies and is interested in potential food prep opportunities.

Minimum commitment: 2 shifts per month for 12 months or longer. After an interview, successful applicants receive a two-hour orientation and training.

Tasks include:

Brewing coffee for guests throughout the day Stocking/Re-stocking of food in Grab 'n Go area including fresh fruit, sweet/salty snacks, refrigerated items, condiments, bagels, muffins, etc. Sanitizing the Grab 'n Go area on a regular basis - wiping counters and other high touch areas Maintaining cleanliness of appliances regularly in use - microwave ovens, toaster ovens, coffee urns, community fridges Maintain supply levels - disposable cups & lids, plates, utensils and other items Food packaging and labeling 

Additional tasks may include:

Assisting kitchen staff in meal service prep Dish, pot and/or equipment cleaning

Requirements:

Must be able to be actively in motion completing tasks for four (4) hours at a time (a break is permitted) Excellent Customer Service skills Ability to lift items weighing 25 lbs. Ability to multi-task Ability to be in a sub 40F degree temperature setting for 15-minute intervals for refrigerated restocking

Shuttle Van Drivers transport guest families from the Ronald McDonald House to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in our Toyota Sienna minivans and Ford Transit vans. Applicants must be between age 21 years old to 70 years old, have a clean driving record and experience with city driving. 

Minimum commitment: 2 shifts per month for 12 months or longer. After an interview, successful applicants will receive a 2-hour orientation and behind-the-wheel on-shift training.

The Ronald McDonald House serves families 365 days per year. Van Drivers are needed daily and shifts vary.
